Cross Country Ski wax comes in different colors which correspond to how cold and wet the snow is. Black or parafin is for -30, special green is -20 to about -10, green is -10 to zero and so on. Swix is a brand of cross country ski wax and they sell (or give away) the thermometer which tells you which wax you need at what temperature.
..and a "kicker" would be wax right under need your foot- so you wax up the entire ski then do a little "grabber" softer wax right under your foot - the whole idea being that you get a smooth slide from the whole ski and still have enough traction to get up the hills.

been too long since i waxed up the skis with the old purple klister.
