August, and the hummingbirds are hungry.
It's something that I do every year, set out lots of feeders for the hummers. They love the juniper next to the house and spend the days sitting in the juniper and flying in for a drink. Everybody loves the juniper.
I once saw one fall asleep at the feeder, only to wake up the next morning, still on the perch. He took a few long slow drinks like one of those bobbing toys and then flew off.
We have Broad-Tail, Black Chinned and Rufous. The Broad-tail arrive first normally around May 1 and then the Black Chinned. The Rufous tend to be particularly aggressive and they come in later in the year- toward the middle of July with the July rains. They've come the farthest and still have a long way to go so they need to tank up.
I'm trying out some new equipment to get hummy video... here's a first attempt. It will be better when the sun moves to the West.

It's endless entertainment- just sitting and watching the birds....
I've been doing this for decades and I am *thrilled* that Perky Pet is finally selling feeder parts. The plastic bases fail long before the glass bottles so I've been able to "rescue" quite a few feeders this way.
One great citizen scientist project is tracking the Hummingbird Migration and yes, there's an app for that...

"The Hummingbird Project" is also one of my favorite sustainable farming initiatives. The clip is from the movie "Dirt".
